Chatuchak market in Bangkok gets a host of upgrades ~ includes cashless payment, automated parking lots and air-conditioned toilets

For those heading out to Bangkok and loves shopping, lets get ready for an upgrade to your ever-popular Chatuchak Weekend Market.

According to the Bangkok Post the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) which manages the Chatuchak market aims to give the destination a host of upgrades, one of which is turning the place into a cashless commercial area by June. Shoppers will then be paying for items from the market through a single card or via QR code, said Dr. Siripong Preutthipan, Director for Land Development from SRT.

Chatuchak occupies an area of 11ha in the north-end of Bangkok and is one of the world’s largest weekend market with more than 1,000 stalls operating in 27 different sections. Thousands of local and tourist heads out to the market every Saturday and Sunday and is one of the main attraction for tourist into Bangkok.

The State Railway of Thailand will be investing more than 100 million baht into the upgrade for the market this year, of which about half will be spent on automated parking lots with completion expected by year end 2018. SRT will also be introducing the new Chatuchak Guide mobile app for a virtual store listing, map and ratings to help shoppers navigate the maze of shops in the market. Another upgrade that shoppers can very much look forward is the new 25 million baht air-conditioned lavatories.
