Penang Hill Corporation (PHC) has announce a fares increase for the funicular train ride in Penang Hill by 20% effective April 1. Under the new price scheme, a normal-lane return ticket for MyKad/MyKid/Valid Resident ID holder will be priced at RM 12 for adults (and RM 6 for one-way adult tickets). Children aged between 4 and 12 and senior citizen aged 60 and above will pay RM 6 instead of RM 5 for return trip fares.
The senior citizens will also be entitled to fast-lane boarding.
However, the monthly passes for residents, workers and the general public as well as all fares in other categories remain unchanged.
According to L.L. Cheok, General Manager of PHC, the new price hike was necessary due to the substantial increase in operation cost as well as the maintenance of the funicular system and stations.
“It’s also for the upkeep of the public infrastructure and facilities of Penang Hill summit areas,” he told a press conference attended by Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow in Komtar yesterday.
Cheok also mentioned that two major maintenance work will be done each year to ensure the funicular system is always safe, reliable and in tip-top condition.
The last price adjustment for normal lanes was done in 2015.
He added that the present rate of “Sunrise/Sunset” at RM3 for MyKad and MyKid holders would be retained during off-seasons.
However, the operation hours will be 6.30am to 8am (presently 6.30am to 9am) and 7.30pm to 9.45pm (presently 7pm to 10.30pm) effective April 1.
